The Heretic shirt was originally available at a couple of live shows and via our Vaultworks store, but is now available from Ant-zen, who were responsible for the original print run.

The Lower And Louder Than You shirt was designed by S.alt of Ant-zen and originally sold at Maschinenfest.
It's for those who have experienced Lustmord live, but feel free to buy one even if you haven't.

Sub (Basement) Bass

The sound for tomorrows show looks promising.

The performance will take place at a disused head of a iron ore mine. A cathedral in concrete with a cavernous space and a 12 second reverb tail.

The sound guys are crazy...

They've spent the last few days tweakingthe sound, measuring structure angles, height from floor to ceiling, air temperature (for air density re sound equalization) , and have calculated very specific locations for each speaker for the best possible sound in the space.

Best of all, they've placed a sub system in the lower basement, pointing directly and precisely at a concrete pillar that goes all the way to the top of the building. The bass will travel along the pillar causing standing waves at key frequencies and the whole basement will act as a subwoofer

Turns out one of the sound guys day job is Theoretical Mathematician.

Like I said, crazy, but my kind of crazy.

The sound system is Funktion One throughout, which I really enjoyed sing at Berghain in Berlin.

I think we should have adequate bass...

(I was on the roof of the tower this afternoon, 65m high. And yes, I don't like heights)

New York Unbound

Trace and I recently spent a week in New York while the Unsound Festival was underway and it was good to spend time with old friends (staying with Choi, one of my oldest friends - since before Lustmord) and catching up with newer ones in the form of the Unsound contingent and extended family.

We missed the Unsound opening concert but tried to make up for it at best we could. Highlights included the live sets of Raz Mesinai and Kode 9 at Bunker, and the Kiss and Tell hosted festival closing party - which we were disappointed to get throw out of at four in the morning when the venue had to close.

Bunker, held regularly at Public Assembly in Williamsburg and hosted by Bryan Kasenic and Seze Devres is the best club in NYC, and highly recommended if you're ever in the area.

New York Talk

As part of my participation in Unsound Festival New York 2011 I will be giving a "talk" in the form of a conversation with Andy Battaglia at the Goethe-Institut Wyoming Building in Manhattan on Saturday, April 9th at 1:30 pm. Admission is free.

I'm not sure exactly what I'll be talking about, most likely something similar to the recent seminar in Stockholm, covering my work and technique etc.

Stockholm Sound

Thanks to everyone who braved the cold to make it to the Lustmord show in Stockholm on January 15th, some waiting 30 minutes in sub-zero temperatures only to be turned away as the theatre became packed to capacity.

The theatre was fairly small, with just over 400 seats, the sound system wasn't very good (I had a couple of extra subwoofers bought in to try and help) and the video projection was particularly weak, but life is often a series of compromises, and hell, it was a fee show so nobody should complain to much, though I personally would have been happier with better sound and video.

The performance was for Swedish Radio's Art's Birthday celebrations and SR broadcast the first half live, and recorded the complete show for broadcast after the event.

I was well taken care of by presenter Lisa Wall and producer Erik Mikael Karlsson and the rest of the SR crew.

I'm enjoying the process of performing live and Stockholm the city and it's people was a very enjoyable experience. Hopefully I'll get a chance to return and make up for those of you who missed the Art's Birthday show.

Having lived in Los Angeles for the last 17 years and not having experienced snowfall in that time, the trip to Stockholm was an interesting experience. Daily highs of -3C and treacherous ice on every surface made moving around a challenge on foot and by car (not that cab drivers seemed to mind) and quite different from the 27C I was enjoying the day after I came back home.

Particularly worth recommending if you're seriously interested in learning some of the skills and techniques required for electronic music is Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) the Swedish national centre for electronic music and sound art.

Founded in 1964 and situated in an old brewery on Söder Mälarstrand, EMS was the first computer music center in Europe and remains one of the premier electronic music facilities worldwide, with first class surround recording studios (including one designed by ABBA's studio designer), experienced teachers and an extensive audio and text archive available to it's students. Well worth contacting if you're serious.

During my time in StockholmI had the great pleasure of experiencing the hospitality of studio director Mats Lindström and studio administrator Isabel Thomson along with the rest of the team at EMS and they were kind enough to host a seminar where I was asked to talk about myself and what I do, for which I did an informal and improvised setting. It was more fun that I expected, helped by interesting questions and some amusing distractions in the front row.

Thanks to all who made it.

The seminar was held at the recently completed Audiorama, with it's immersive surround speaker array. Since I didn't bring surround material with me we only utilized a part of the system, where I playing some Lustmord recordings as part of the talk, including unreleased material and remixes, as well as examples of my sound design for film.

The seminar was recorded by EMS and will be available as part of their in-house archive.

Audiorama would make an ideal setting for a purpose-built surround presentation. Should anyone want to fund something...

I'll bring some examples of some of the work I've done, both music and sound design, and we'll see where it goes from there.

Zoetrope Vinyl Update

We just received our shipment of Zoetrope vinyl.
Some will be kept to give to friends, a few will be passed on to a US distributor or two and we'll make a few more available for direct sale via Vaultworks.
We won't have many available for sale and it only really makes sense to buy from us if you're in North America or possibly Asia. For those of you in Europe, shipping will be cheaper if you buy directly from Burning World.

We only have a few of the gold vinyl version and will be keeping most if not all of those for friends.

Please note: Sorry but these will NOT be available before christmas, current projects makes it impossible to deal with shipping right now.

Preparations for Performing Live

I've been working on video footage to use as a live backdrop over the last month, and after a slow start (learning After Effects from the ground up) I've been having a lot of fun with it, using the same approach I do with the music (and it is intended to reflect the mood of the music I intend to perform live), and now starting to move over to audio since it seems like a good idea to have some music prepared too...

Lustmord will make a second live appearance in twenty nine years performing at the 2010 Unsound Festival in Krakow.
The concert is scheduled to take place on October 22 2010 and aptly enough is part of Unsound's 2010 theme: Horror, the pleasure of fear and unease.

Also on the same bill there will be Moritz von Oswald Trio and Hildur Guðnadóttir with Adam Wiltzie (of Stars of The Lid).

Trace worked as part of the Legacy Effects team who created Warhammer 40,000 suits for this years E3, as did a few of our friends.
She shot some footage using her basic handheld digital stills camera and just for some fun I edited them together, added some text effects, some music I did a few years back et, to share with the friends who worked on the project.

Seemed like it might be additional fun to also share it here, give this blog some additional context. So here it is.

Anger Is An Energy

Kenneth Anger is a very influential filmmaker, author, artist and Crowley expert which I'm sure many of you are familiar with.
As a kid from a small town aged 16-17, with nothing but prospects of a dead-end job I remember seeing his movies for the first time being struck by the possibilities.
They were amongst a few examples of things that showed that there were other crazy people out there doing their thing and that there was more out there and they helped influence and inspire me to get out there and do something myself.

Last year Trace and myself went to see this fun lecture of his on Crowley at Hammer here in LA.

Afterwards, in one of those surreal moments life throws you from time to time, we had dinner with him for which he insisted on paying.
He's quite a character and has many great anecdotes and I had quite a kick from the experience plus an anecdote of my own.

From VCS 3 to XILS 3

For twenty five years from 1980 I used EMS synthesizers, originally a VCS 3 and latter a Synthi AKS, and they can be heard all over my work during that period. I also used them when I was involved with SPK, including live (the first two SPK albums featured Synthi's extensively). Coincidentally I also recorded the first Lustmord album at the EMS Putney studio (London) in 1981.
I used only a few other synths over the years, a Roland unit, a Korg Wavestation briefly and a Waldorf Microwave, but all minimally as I prefer audio manipulation to synthesis. But the VC3 and the Synthi AKS were a major part of my sonic arsenal.

VCS 3

If you want a synth that emulates "real" instruments (an idea that always seemed rather pointless to me), there are plenty to choose from that do that to varying but never satisfying degrees. But synthesizers should be about more than that and that's where the EMS Synths excelled, they were different, and while you could get them to do the same kind of sound as their contemporaries, they also had an unparalleled ability to create much more unusual and extreme sounds, which is why I used them.

Synthi AKS

I gradually sold off what little hardware synths I had, along with most of my studio hardware (various "high end" processors, ProTools etc) to focus on a software based setup built around my ever trusty Mac platform, but I held on to my Synthi AKS and it was the very last piece of hardware I sold, to a guy in Moscow for $7,000.

There's simply nothing that sounds quite like a EMS Synthi.
Until now...

XILS 3

XILS Lab have bought out a very faithful emulation of the VCS 3 in the form of an audio plugin for the host platform of your choice.
Not only does it faithfully reproduces the sound of the VCS 3 and it's matrix interface, but it adds many additional features that enhance and improve on the abilities and sound of the original, many of which are only possible in software.
Better yet, they're doing so for €139 ($205), much less than the $7,000 plus going rate for a used Synthi,
It works like it should and then some, and programmer/developer Xavier Oudin is busy tweaking and improving with updates.
A rare "must have".

XILS 3 Matrix

And in a true "no-brainer" deal, for a limited time Audiomidi.com in conjunction with XILS Lab is offering a "light" version of the XILS 3 for $20, which can be upgraded to the full version for an additional $100.

I've updated a few things here and there on the Lustmord site, including uploading a couple of interviews from the last year some may have missed, some new links etc.

Been dealing with a lot of html and CSS annoyances over the last few days (do all the Lustmord online sites myself, mostly by bludgeoning code into submission as I have no background in code and only very basic knowledge - as is only to evident looking at the results). Finally getting things to work (at least). Not perfect but at least they do work.

Site updates are done and now finishing off on the code for the newsletter before getting back to music.
